Impact Texas Drivers (ITD): What It Is and How to Complete It
Texas DPS requires you to watch a free distracted-driving video before your road test. Here is which version applies to you, how to complete it, and how long your certificate lasts.
One Video, Watched Before You Take the Skills Test
The Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) program is a free video course from the Texas Department of Public Safety about the consequences of distracted driving. Everyone applying for a Texas driver license must complete the version that matches their age before taking the driving skills test. It is not a course you buy, and no driving school can complete it for you — you watch it yourself on the DPS site and download a certificate at the end.

Use a desktop or laptop
The DPS video player does not work on a phone, tablet, or iPad. This is the single most common reason people get stuck.
Pick the course for your age
ITTD if you are under 18, ITYD if you are 18 to 24, ITAD if you are 25 or older.
Watch it start to finish
The player tracks completion. Closing the tab partway means starting that section again.
Download and save the certificate
Save the PDF and email it to yourself. You must present it at your skills test, and DPS does not resend it.

Your ITD certificate is valid for 90 days, and it only lets you sit the driving skills test — it is not a license and it is not a driver education course. Most people need a road test appointment and, if they have not driven much, a few hours behind the wheel with an instructor first.

Is the Impact Texas Drivers course free?
Yes. ITD is provided free by the Texas Department of Public Safety. No driving school charges for it, and any site asking you to pay for the impact video itself is not the official program.
Can I watch the Impact Texas Drivers video on my phone?
No. The DPS player requires a desktop computer or laptop. It is not compatible with a cell phone, tablet, or iPad.
How long is the Impact Texas Drivers certificate valid?
The certificate is valid for 90 days from completion. If you do not take your driving skills test within that window, you must watch the video again.
What is the difference between ITTD, ITYD and ITAD?
They are the same program split by age. ITTD is for drivers under 18 and runs two hours. ITYD is for ages 18 to 24 and runs one hour. ITAD is for drivers 25 and over and runs one hour.
Do I need Impact Texas Drivers if I already have a license from another state?
If you are transferring a valid out-of-state license and are not required to take the driving skills test, you do not need the impact course. If DPS requires you to take the skills test, you do.
I lost my Impact Texas Drivers certificate. Can I get it again?
DPS does not resend certificates. You will need to complete the video again to generate a new one, which is why saving the PDF immediately matters.
Does Dallas Defensive Driving School provide the impact course?
No — ITD is completed directly on the DPS website and cannot be taken through a driving school. We help with what comes after it: the road test, in-car lessons, and the driver education courses Texas requires.
